Myrtle

Three days of the last nine, Myrtle has crawled out of the warm ocean to sunbathe on the beach. It's mating season and she needs to rest!
Sometimes after resting for five hours she creeps towards the sea to catch a wave. This is no easy matter, it takes hours to turn and seemingly water under her leathery appendages.
She is The Talk of the Town! People don't understand; the turtle requires rest, not 20 people crowding around her with
Flash cameras doing ' on location modeling! Yes, i have heard women make  costume changes to have their photo taken with Myrtle.
The women next door are outraged and  repeatedly call Animal welfare to come and 'do something'!
As an elder i want to organize a sit in. A peaceful group meditating in a circle, holding space for Myrtle while she dozes
Joyfully undisturbed.
Alas it's too darn hot to sit for long. . .

Mother

In the morning I sit at the edge of the lanai to Watch. Today while looking up for the vanishing moon I saw a star just above my crown in the morning light. A message came to me:
" You are the moon and the stars to me " a line from Hoyt Axton's Gypsy Moth song.
A birthday gift from Mother.

Birthday Lunch at Honu Pizza and Fish

Two stickers, "Practice Aloha" my motto too, come along  with our bill.
But let's start at the beginning:)
Our intention to return to Mala Tavern, a very upscale 'joint'.
We had been swimming so my hair was matted and salt laden, i took my time in the shower, blow drying and flat ironing, then i dressed and needed help tying my new pink sarong.
We arrived slightly later than anticipated to a throng converging on Mala!
It was a no brainer to take the door less traveled, owned by the same family.
What a wonderful lesson to go with the glow! We were seated near the ocean's rocky edge overlooking Lahaina boat basin.
First our server brought deep fried spiced garbanzo beans:

Then we ordered beverages:

For lunch we chose the Caesar with a buttermilk dressing and bleu cheese mousse, and the Ahi Sausage Pizza!

Dan told me i didn't have to finish my gin martini, he knows me well!

Our Private Beach

Just twenty feet from our Lanai lies sleepily, our daily haven. Oh yes, the surf pounds the postage stamp of a beach all night long and sends us into ecstacy by day. We can take two steps to the north of the limu beds, where the happy honu graze, and we drop to our bellies in warm undulating salt water. I let the ocean waters 'take me' drawing my willing body deeper and deeper until i am just a cork!
Even in the night as i lay i can awaken to my swaying body, remembering the wave's currents sashay the length of my spine like a stem of seaweed.
It's quite lovely to find involuntary, intrinsic movements as i fall asleep to the sea's song.

Wednesday

We took a fine hike this morning, as accidental tourists. The Ohai Loop was only 1.2 but in a remote region of the North Shore. It was gorgeous, unspoiled and perfectly quiet! So much igneous rock it was like a Volcanic Moab :)

Overheard

"Those rocks are about to drop their leaves!

Overheard;
I might need to buy a new bikini, mine are all getting wet!

We like Wailuku, but they don't have a volcano!"

A Dippy World Series

Game 1:
The Cardinals and the Red Sox play for the World Series Championship At 2:00 as in 'afternoon', of all times, and it's a heavenly sunny day on Maui.
We have laid in a black olive pizza from Pizza Paradisio. They also sell heads of riasted garluc for $1.75, we picked one up! The Lokilani  garden has fresh basil  and tomatoes to add pizazz to the pizza!
We settle on the sofa and open both lanai door sliders to get some large breathing room:)
Dan proclaims he will take a dip in the ocean just outside the lawn between innings! Such a fun guy!
I am going to go along to spot him. As we come over the lawn guess what we see! Turtle stayed most of the day and we checked on him between innings.
What a great day! The turtle drew a crowd. At one point, he caught a wave and sailed out to graze before returning to bed down for the night.

Tuesday's Child

Everyday a painting, just to 'hang loose' and enjoy living Hawaiian Style! The colors seemed right and there were trees to inspire me. . . It was a 'sure thing'!
Then 'the underworld wanted to 'speak'.
Once inverted i kind of liked it mo betta:)
As they say on Moloka'i

What happened to my sweet compositions which captured Bliss?

The song in my head/ I need a book

So i downloaded Black Beauty by Anna Sewell!
And i can still sing this with a few modifications-

If I had a boat
I'd go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony
I'd ride him on my boat
And we could all together
Go out on the ocean
Me upon my pony on my boat

If I were roy rogers
I'd sure enough be single
I couldn't bring myself to marrying old dale
It'd just be me and trigger
We'd go riding through them movies
Then we'd buy a boat and on the sea we'd sail

And if I had a boat
I'd go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony
I'd ride him on my boat
And we could all together
Go out on the ocean
Me upon my pony on my boat

The mystery masked man was smart
He got himself a tonto
'cause tonto did the dirty work for free
But tonto he was smarter
And one day said kemo sabe
Kiss my ass I bought a boat
I'm going out to sea

And if I had a boat
I'd go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony
I'd ride him on my boat
And we could all together
Go out on the ocean
Me upon my pony on my boat

And if I were like lightning
I wouldn't need no sneakers
I'd come and go wherever I would please
And I'd scare 'em by the shade tree
And I'd scare 'em by the light pole
But I would not scare my pony on my boat out on the sea

And if I had a boat
I'd go out on the ocean
And if I had a pony
I'd ride him on my boat
And we could all together
Go out on the ocean
Me upon my pony on my boat

Haupia Sorbet

Mikey turned us onto this delight four years ago. (We feel the same way about Spumoni during the holidays!)
Our rhythm here has been 'off', up at five breakfast at sunrise, lunch at 11, and dinner in the late afternoon before sunset at 5:30-6:00. So just before bed we sneak into the kitchen and take two bowls from the cupboard.
Dicing fresh pineapple, shaving dark chocolate and coarse chopping macadamias for 'what's to come'!
The moment arrives: in a cool frosty fog, the freezer compartment quietly open to reveal. . .

Oh, NO!

Sunset

We took in the early Happy Hour at The Sea House. It was sweltering and we had a bit of a wait! HH starts at 2:00 so when we arrived at 3:30 it was packed! Sweat trickled off our faces until they called our name.
A woman leaving the restaurant stopped abruptly in front of me. Poking a finger into my bicep said,  " you look just like my friend Deanne. From Las Vegas. She is 71 and looks 50!" Not sure that was a compliment. . .
We ordered well Lettuce wraps a cheese plate and the white Bordeaux for me, Dan chose the chopped salad and kahlua pork tacos with a beer.
Home again hone again for so many sunset photos and a together photo!

Energy

For the first time EVER, dan and I used a flat iton

Energy is what you get when you drink a spinach banana pineapple almond milk smoothie  with POG and coffee :)
We were up for sunrise and ate. Dan made the magic microwave egg in a mug!
Then for the first time EVER, dan and I used the flat iron, it wasn't that hard:)
We hit the 'trail' earlier than yesterday so to escape the sun bearing down upon us. Our four miler began at The Westin Kaanapali  and meandered beaches, boardwalks, golf courses, hotel lobbies and parking lots. We fished the one way at The Kaanapali Beach Hotel. And we retraced our steps.
My reward was a purple parejo and a sweet pair of amethyst heart earrings.
We went for a dip but not before I began a new painting. . .

And made mighty wraps for lunch and painted some more! It is pretty shocking, even to me.

Seasick on land

It occurs to me that three of the last four weeks have been on the high seas or adjacent to the Seas.
My stomach has been confused too; am I hungry, tense or seasick? The constant sounds of the ocean have me tricked into  having a queasy stomach.

The Mala Tavern

We ordered well! For $47.00 I guess we should have leftovers!
The Bikini Blonde Ale had a light wood smoked  flavor. It was luscious with the ground ahi burger and garlicky parsley fries which we split.  As if that wasn't enough, we thought to try the gado gado vegan salad. Get this: a bed of red rice, micro greens, sugar snap peas, garbanzos, shelled edamame, watermelon radish, grape tomatoes and shredded carrot. It is dressed with a peanut coconut dressng and topped with fresh tofu and black sesame seeds.
In the afternoon i painted while Dan read and we have just emerged from a swimming adventure. In one piece I might add.

Surfing Turtles

I told Dan he can't eat breakfast until he spots a turtle. He countered, you can't eat a fish sandwich at Malas until we take the inaugural dip!
Hahahaha
Also, last night he suggested it's my Birthday Week and i can do anything I want every day! Oh, the POWER!

Zip lining
Horseback riding
A new parejo and jewelry from Belinda Leigh's daily
Molokai ferry
Archery at Kokele
Swimming deep pools in Hana: milepost three.
Aaaahhh. . .

Breakfast

Heaven

Day Tripper

Twelve hours from pre dawn to nightfall.
We had the presence to move smoothly though the day and pick up rental car and shop for groceries. We were too tired to eat and thankful for a pineapple sushi and , a chocolate bar.
The ocean is experiencing high surf perhaps associated with the full moon of October.
At eight we crawled into bed. Sleeping deeply until 4:00. The sounds of the waves like  'bombs bursting in air' just thirty feet from our lanai.
Dan was shocked when i called the sounds' irritating' , the nature i seek is peaceful. This makes me laugh and gaggle.
It is good to be here in Honokowai!

Ready, Set. . .

It's Friday! Anna and I are elebrating our birthdays at Cactus YAYA with Carrie and Pilgrim while Dan golfs Tri Mountain. I picked up a woven straw  purse with gold trim to use as a carry on and beach bag for $2.00, boots for Anna and I bracelet for Carrie. Pilgrim looked bored to tears.
Tomorrow Mr P returns to GDB for kenneling which he will enjoy. . . .he did last time while we went on our repositioning cruise. I called graduate services this morning to begin the process of getting Pilgrim ready for our January trip to Kauai. It takes a few months for blood titering, which involves the blood being sent to Kansas to a particular lab to check antibody levels.
I raked leaves tonight and Dan said Aloha to the bumper crop of basil from summertime,
I sure appreciate that Dan designed this blog since that is his divine gift.
More tomorrow~
